An impacted wisdom tooth can cause a number of dental problems, including:
- Damage to other teeth
- Damage to jaw bone
- Sinus congestion
- Gum irritation or disease
Dental infection is a common reason for emergency wisdom tooth extraction at SEDA Dental’s practice because it can arise quickly and may have severe consequences for a patient’s overall oral health.
Wisdom Tooth Symptoms
Normally, SEDA Dental is able to anticipate the need for a patient to have one or more wisdom teeth removed and that patient is able to schedule wisdom tooth extraction in advance. In some cases, though, wisdom tooth symptoms are so sudden, severe, or uncomfortable that a patient needs to undergo emergency wisdom tooth extraction at our dental practice.
Symptoms of a problematic wisdom tooth may include:
- Stiffness in the jaw
- Irritated gums
- Irritated cheek
- Irritated tongue
- Irritation to the top or bottom of the mouth
- Infection of gum flap that covers a wisdom tooth
- Crowding of other teeth
- Gum disease
- Prolonged sinus congestion
The Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure
Before emergency wisdom tooth removal, SEDA Dental will use either local or general anesthesia to ensure that the patient remains comfortable during the procedure. Some of our patients who suffer from dental anxiety or phobia find that sedation dentistry is the best option for them, as it allows them to become totally relaxed during treatment. To begin the procedure, SEDA Dental will gently remove any gum tissue that covers the tooth. Then your dentist will remove any bone that covers the tooth so that the tooth is totally exposed. Once our experienced Dentist separates the tissue connecting the wisdom tooth to the jaw bone, he will be able to extract the wisdom tooth and then close the area with a few stitches.
Patients normally experience modest swelling and discomfort after a wisdom tooth extraction, and SEDA Dental will prescribe a pain medication and antibiotics to help the patient stay pain-free. Most patients recover from wisdom tooth removal in one to three days.
