Steppin’ Out With “Grillz”

During Fashion Week in London, Kendall Jenner made appearances in a white crocheted poncho with gold “ Grillz ” covering her canine and bicuspid teeth. The peek of gold in her smile showed a little edge in the young model’s personal style. Whether you like the look or not, you have to admit it takes some courage to wear tooth jewelry.

Are They Safe?

If you look at tooth accessories and think, “I didn’t even know something like that existed! Is it even safe?”  The answer is yes. And no.  Or rather, it depends.  There are no studies that indicate a safety concern for “Grillz” or dental jewelry. There are also no studies following the effects of long-term wear.

So Which Is It?

In general, when worn for short periods of time and cared for, metal covers for your teeth are harmless. But there are some precautions you should take if this is a Grillzlook that you want.

  • Remember that these “Grillz” and others are accessories, not actual teeth, so you shouldn’t eat or drink with them in.  Also, step up your dental hygiene game. Just wearing the grill can trap sugar, acid, and bacteria in your teeth, advancing tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Use water and a non-abrasive toothpaste or baking soda to clean them. DO NOT use a metal or jewelry cleaner.  You could end up ingesting toxins from the chemicals and becoming very ill.
  • Purchase one that is made of a precious metal like gold or silver. Base metals like nickel, tin, and aluminum can cause irritations to your gums, cheeks, and lips, in the same way that cheap earrings can inflame your ear lobes!
